Empowering futures, transforming lives
At The Ethiopian Students Assistance Fund (ESAF), our mission is to uplift vulnerable Ethiopian students and families. We provide essential support including school bags, stationery, learning materials, clothing, and household items, alongside modest grants for education and pastoral needs. Through responsible distribution via trusted church and community networks, we strive to create lasting positive change. Discover our story and how we continue Father Colin Battell's legacy.

Our inspiring beginning
The Ethiopian Students and Families Fund (ESAF) is a UK-based non-profit community fund, passionately founded in 1985 by Father Colin Battell. His dedication stemmed from profound pastoral and humanitarian work with Ethiopian children and families during and in the aftermath of devastating famine years. ESAF continues his original mission, offering small-scale, accountable support focused on education, essential household items, and overall family welfare, built on trust and direct engagement.

Our unique approach and values
Our approach is defined by being targeted, simple, connected, community-driven, and working directly with families. ESAF was established on a 'pen and paper' over 40 years ago, operating without a complex corporate structure. The success of our work is freely spoken about by those who have benefited, and it doesn't take long to witness the profound impact Father Colin's continued dedication has made in countless Ethiopian lives.
“The impact of ESAF’s work is undeniable; it’s a testament to sustained compassion and direct support that truly transforms lives.”
